Forest Treasure Hunt, 2021
Participatory art, site-specific installation, Metal object, sign, public participation, Object: approx. 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm, Volcanic forest, Haikou, Hainan, China
Forest Treasure Hunt is a participatory art project carried out by Fang Ting Ting in a volcanic forest in Haikou, Hainan, in 2021. She hid a tiny metal object, measuring approximately 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm, in a crevice in volcanic rock. A sign at the entrance invited people to enter the forest and search for it in return for a reward. The work responds to people’s reliance on digital media and instant access to information. It directs attention towards a search that requires physical effort, close observation and patience. Participants only began searching once the reward was increased. The search lasted almost an hour, with moments of fatigue, frustration, discussion and cooperation, until the object was found.
